Year 1: Ash and Pine
Welcome to Year 1 at Red Oaks Primary School
Welcome to Year 1—a year full of excitement, exploration and growth! As children transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1, we continue to nurture their curiosity and independence through a rich and engaging curriculum.
Your teaching team this year includes Mrs Walton, Mrs Lawrence, Mrs Wright, and Mrs Prophet, supported by our wonderful support staff: Miss Hall, Mrs Kord, Mrs Rigby, Miss Tyler, Mrs Broadhurst, and Mrs Sprosson. Together, we create a warm, inclusive environment where every child is encouraged to thrive.
This year, children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check—an important milestone that helps us celebrate their progress in early reading and phonics. We’re working hard to ensure every child feels confident and supported as they build these essential skills.
We’re also continuing to embed continuous provision into our Year 1 classrooms. This approach allows children to access a range of purposeful learning opportunities throughout the day, encouraging independence, creativity, and deeper engagement with their learning.
We value strong partnerships with families and are always here to support you. Keep an eye on this page for updates, key dates, and glimpses into our learning journey.
Here’s to a fantastic year ahead—full of curiosity, creativity, and confidence!

Spellings Term 3
Dear Parents and Carers,
We wanted to share some information about how our weekly spellings will work in Year 1.
Each week, the children will receive 8 spellings linked to the phonics they are learning in class. These words should be practised using segmenting and blending, just as the children do during their phonics sessions.
Alongside these, there will be 4 tricky words. These words cannot be sounded out in the usual way, so children should learn to read them by sight and spell them using letter names.
Every Friday, the children will be tested on both the 8 spellings and the 4 tricky words.
Weekly spellings will be posted on Class Dojo and on the school website, clearly labelled with the test date. If you would prefer a paper copy, please let your child’s class teacher know and we will be happy to provide one.
Thank you for your continued support with reading and spelling at home. It makes a real difference to the children’s confidence and progress.
Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Best wishes
Mrs Walton, Mrs Wright and Mrs Lawrence
