International Week of the Deaf 23rd-29th September 2019
This is an initiative of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) that was first launched in 1958 in Rome, Italy. It is celebrated annually by the global Deaf Community on the last week of September each year to commemorate the same month the first World Congress of the WFD was held. International Week of the Deaf is celebrated through various activities by the respective Deaf Communities worldwide. International Week of the Deaf is the only week in a year that sees highly concerted global advocacy to raise awareness about the Deaf Community on different levels. It is about gathering together, becoming united, and showing that unity to the rest of the world.
International Week of the Deaf strives to promote the human rights of deaf people and highlight topics that merit attention.
All year groups looked at different topics. We were able to discuss why people use sign language and how it should be used. We looked at the differences of hearing loss, what being Deaf means and how Deaf people can choose how they communicate. We were lucky to have our Deaf support staff discuss their lives, university choices and how their lives are sometimes different to those who can hear. Have a look at some of our discussions in these videos below:
One of our Year 6 pupils also explains what she thinks about pupils learning sign language.

Happy Birthday

This is the Happy Birthday song that we sing in celebration assembly.

The children are using British Sign Language.
Can you fingerspell the alphabet
During Term 5 at Red Oaks, we celebrated Sign Language week. We learnt about different ways of communicating without using our voices. We looked using gestures, pointing, facial expressions and British Sign Language and throughout it all had to remember- NO VOICES! We now have an ongoing challenge throughout Red Oaks and that is to learn how to fingerspell the alphabet from A-Z. Once we have perfected it, we will receive a certificate and have the chance to stand up in celebration assembly! We can't wait to see how many take up this challenge, why don't you give it a go at home?

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support): Feb 2019

We have been trialling some ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support) within our team for the last few weeks. It has been such great fun. We have noticed some of our weaknesses, our strengths and made our thoughts into positive ones. This week we played 'Higher or Lower', allowing us to take risks and understanding it is ok to make a mistake and get something wrong. We understand that as long as we continue to pick ourselves up and try again, we still have opportunities to get things right!!

Aladdin: Dec 2018
On 14th December we were delighted to see the pantomime Aladdin interpreted into BSL! We laughed out loud, loved the beautiful costumes and gave plenty of boos with lots of thumbs down. We followed the evil sorcerer Abanazar, Aladdin, his brother Wishee Washee and, of course his mother Widow Twankey, on a spectacular adventure and we loved every minute. We especially loved the flying carpets, a wish-granting genie, an evil sorcerer and most of all a delicious tasting ice cream during the interval!
